My home church, Christ Lutheran, Pipe Lake, produced a cookbook in 1949. We used this cookbook at home throughout the 1950’s. The recipes produced good, hearty and tasty, if not the most healthful, eating.
The cookbook is also a reflection of the times. The foreword contains an Ode to a housewife.
To love and honor are okay,
And one might promise to obey;
But what makes wives turn slowly gray
Is what to cook each blessed day?
Each section begins with a bit of poetry. For instance the bread recipe section leads off with,
A slice of bread with butter on’t
May feed a king;
A biscuit with crust upon’t
Is comforting.
The very day necessities, no doubt,
Are those which none of us can do without.
I could not find the source for the above either in Bartlett’s or by Googling.
An advertisement for Swans Down cake flour pictured a cake and proclaimed, “This man-dazzler shows you why more women choose Swans Down than any other packaged cake flour.”
