An email Missouri District President Ray Mirly sent to pastors listed the ten most quoted bible passages. It should be no surprise that John 3:16 is number 1. For God so Loved the World the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
I think I previously shared that John 3:16 was the first of 500 passages I memorized at age 7 in order to earn a trip to a camp near Rhinelander, Wisconsin. A kind of Bible passage Bee was held during that week. I was knocked out in the first round because someone already recited John 3:16 and it was the only one I could remember.
R.C.H. Lenski devotes 6 pages to this one verse in his commentary. He writes “Jesus summed up the entire gospel in one lovely sentence…if a man had only these words and nothing of the rest of the bible, he could by truly comprehending them be saved. They flow like milk and honey says Luther, ’words which are able to make the sad happy, the dead alive, in only the heart believes them firmly‘.”
God gave his only son, Jesus, to die on the cross and rise to new life so that whoever in the entire world trusts in Jesus Christ, that person will not perish but live eternally.
For the gift of His Son and the eternal life that comes with Faith in Jesus, God’s Son, we give thanks and glorify God.
Over the nest few weeks I will intersperse the top ten with other Drive Thru Devotions.
