In 2003, Concordia Theological Seminary (CTS), introduced their Deaconess Program. The foundation of deaconess ministry is tied to Wilhelm Loehe; a founding father of CTS. Loehe was committed to the training of deaconess in the mid to late 1800's. CTS views the start of their program as the continuation of what Loehe began. There are three deaconess programs in the LCMS: Concordia Seminary, Concordia University Chicago, and Concordia Theological Seminary.

There are two graduate programs within the LCMS geared towards Deaconess formation. One program is at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, MO (Concordia Theological Seminary in Ft. Wayne, IN offers one as well). CSL allows deaconess students two avenues through the M.A. program: 1) M.A. in Deaconess Studies or 2) Graduate School M.A. and Deaconess certifcation.

The Concordia Deaconess Conference (CDC) is an association of certified and commissioned LCMS deaconesses. The CDC was founded in 1980 and LCMS deaconesses trained to share to the Gospel through three branches of ministry: works mercy, spiritual care, and teaching the Christian faith.
